Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Weight Loss

What distinguishes Lifestyle Physicians from other medical weight loss programs?
Our program is led by Dr. Sagar Verma, MD (ABOM), a Board-Certified Obesity Medicine Physician with over 10 years of clinical experience in obesity management. Unlike commercial weight loss programs, we take a comprehensive medical approach: every patient undergoes a full wellness exam, metabolic testing, body composition analysis, and lab work before a personalized treatment plan is created. We address the underlying physiological causes of weight gain — including insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic disorders — rather than focusing solely on caloric restriction. Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, are accepted.
Does insurance cover medical weight loss treatment at Lifestyle Physicians?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend contacting our office prior to your first appointment so our team can verify your benefits and clarify any out-of-pocket costs. Specific medications, lab work, and ancillary services may be subject to individual plan limitations.
What happens during the first visit?
Your initial visit consists of two parts. First, a clinical wellness exam (approximately 40 minutes) that includes body composition analysis, resting metabolic rate evaluation (fasted), and body measurements. This is followed by a one-on-one physician consultation with Dr. Verma or one of our providers (approximately 45 minutes), during which your full medical history, lab results, and metabolic data are reviewed. Together, you will establish a personalized plan that includes a guided meal plan, any indicated medications or supplements, and behavioral and lifestyle modification recommendations.
What FDA-approved weight loss medications are available?
When clinically appropriate, Dr. Verma may prescribe FDA-approved pharmacotherapy as part of your individualized treatment plan. Options include GLP-1 receptor agonist injections such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), as well as oral medications such as Phentermine, Bontril, Contrave, and Qsymia. Saxenda (liraglutide) is also available. Medications are prescribed only when indicated based on your clinical evaluation — they are not a standard component of every patient’s plan.
What lab work and diagnostics are included in the program?
Initial lab work is comprehensive and designed to identify metabolic contributors to weight gain. Testing evaluates insulin resistance, thyroid hormone levels, inflammatory markers, and sex hormone panels, among other indicators. In addition to labs, all patients receive body composition analysis using InBody technology and metabolic testing. Follow-up lab work may be ordered as clinically necessary throughout the program.
How does the follow-up structure work after the initial visit?
After your initial consultation, you will check in with a clinical staff member each week for a weigh-in and progress review. A full provider consultation occurs every two weeks. Body composition analysis is repeated every fourth visit to objectively measure changes in fat mass, lean mass, and metabolic markers. As you approach your goal weight, you will transition into the Adaptation Phase, followed by a structured Maintenance Plan developed with Dr. Verma to support long-term weight management.
What nutrition support is provided throughout the program?
Patients receive a detailed, grocery-based meal plan complete with menus and shopping lists at each stage of the program. Plans are updated as your nutritional needs evolve and as you progress toward your goal. Medically formulated meal replacements are also available for patients who benefit from structured nutrition support — particularly during the program’s initial phases or during travel. Meal replacements are offered on a week-to-week basis with no contract required, and there is no obligation to purchase them.
Can I work with a nutritionist as part of my weight loss program?
Yes. Natasha Frisk, CHNP, CHN, our in-house Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Health Coach, is available as an optional add-on service for patients enrolled in Dr. Verma’s medical weight loss program. Working in close collaboration with Dr. Verma, Natasha provides individualized nutritional counseling and guidance to complement your physician- directed treatment plan. Her support is designed to help you build sustainable dietary habits, address nutritional gaps, and strengthen the lifestyle foundations that support lasting weight management. Please ask our team about adding nutritional counseling to your plan.
Do you offer virtual consultations?
Yes, virtual consultations are available at our Warrenton and Culpeper locations for eligible patients. Certain visits — such as your initial wellness exam, body composition analysis, and metabolic testing — require in-person attendance. Follow-up consultations and medication management visits may be conducted virtually depending on your clinical circumstances. Please contact our office to determine which visit types can be completed remotely based on your location and individual plan.
What support is available after reaching my goal weight?
Ongoing maintenance support is available to all patients who complete the program. Dr. Verma will review your individualized maintenance plan before you transition out of active treatment to ensure you have the tools and strategies needed to sustain your results. Patients who choose to continue clinic-based follow-up after reaching their goal weight are welcomed without judgment. Weight management is a long-term commitment, and our team remains a resource for you at any stage of your journey.
