Botox/Xeomin is a purified protein derived from botulinum toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA which when injected, acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent the muscle fibers from contracting thereby relaxing the underlying muscles, and removing the wrinkles. The wrinkles may be caused by aging, brutal environmental factors such as exposure to sun, repetitive frowning, smiling, squinting, or raising eyebrows. By relaxing the underlying muscles, the skin looks smoother and younger.
Other botulinum toxins used for facial wrinkles are abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc) and incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin). Botox/Xeomin is most popular but Xeomin is considered the purest as it contains no additives.
In 1989, the FDA gave clearance for the botulinum type to treat muscle spasms. FDA clearance for cosmetic use was granted in 2002 and millions of patients have been treated since then.
